Feel secure, enjoy romance

Right in the heart of the Rhine Romanticism region – a place to enjoy and experience, to discover and feel at home. Let yourself be surprised by what awaits you far away from everyday life at the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

The Alte Bauernschänke was built in 1408 and has been owned by the Berg family for over 50 years. It is tailored to the needs of its guests, constantly modernized, and expanded to three buildings with Berg's Vis á vis and Berg's Auszeit “Wellness & Wine.” The Berg family has been active in the restaurant business for more than 100 years and is passionate about hospitality. In cooperation with the “Kräuterwirte Assmannshausen” and as a member of the “Welterbe Gastgeber,” regionality is a high priority and is reflected throughout the entire establishment.

01

From the origin

The origins of Berg's Alte Bauernschänke lie in what is now the “Vis á Vis” section, which was once run by Konrad Berg, a winegrower from Hattenheim, as a small hotel with eight rooms under the name “Nassauer Hof” from 1918 onwards.

In 1960, his son Fritz Berg and his wife Lore acquired the historic “Alte Bauernschänke” (old farmhouse tavern) opposite.

The middle and oldest part of this complex, built in 1408, was formerly a towage station. It housed stables and a changing station for donkeys and horses that pulled the ships upstream through the narrow Rhine Valley.

The front part of the building, with its pointed gable and half-timbered walls, housed a smithy. In front of it, as was customary in rural areas, was the manure heap.

The change

In 1870, the Niederwald, which had always been a popular region for strolling, gained tourist significance with the construction of the Germania.

At that time, the then owner of the Alte Bauernschänke visited Vienna. He liked the tradition of the Heurigen: listening to music, dancing, and drinking wine. Fritz Wittmann turned the former donkey stable into a place of “Rhenish cheerfulness” long before the famous Rüdesheimer Drosselgasse gained its reputation for this. People danced here and emptied many a barrel.

In 1885, the cog railway was built, bringing guests from the valley to the Niederwald. In the upper part of the property (our current breakfast restaurant), the Hotel zur Zahnradbahn was built.

Until now

To this day, we maintain the tradition of producing our own house wine. The small Konrad Berg & Sohn winery is now in its third generation and offers highly acclaimed wines.

In 2006, the business expanded once again to include the adjacent “Berg's Auszeit” area, which offers our guests high-quality “wellness & wine.” There is still much more to tell—visit us and experience tradition and family warmth.
